Clinicians interested in pursuing or advancing a career in academic medicine are invited to apply for a range of fully funded fellowship opportunities at the Francis Crick Institute, one of the world’s leading biomedical research centres.

Based in central London, the Francis Crick Institute is a multidisciplinary biomedical discovery research institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology of health and disease. Its clinical fellowship programmes are open to research-focused clinicians from all specialties and career stages.

Fellows become part of a vibrant community of more than 1,000 researchers and gain access to state-of-the-art facilities, technology platforms, networking opportunities, extensive training and mentorship, and career development support. All programmes are fully funded and include salary support, tuition fees where applicable, research costs, and training, travel and visa support.

Opportunities include:

Doctoral Clinical Fellowships (PhD for Clinicians)

Applications are now open and close on 4 November 2026.

The three-year Doctoral Clinical Fellowship programme enables clinicians to undertake biomedical discovery research leading to a PhD through the Crick PhD Programme.

Successful applicants will benefit from:

  • Registration with University College London (UCL), King’s College London or Imperial College London
  • Joint supervision from a Crick group leader and university partner
  • Support from a dedicated thesis committee

New AI and Machine Learning Clinical Fellowships

Applications are now open and close on 11 November 2026.

The Crick has launched a new AI and Machine Learning Clinical Fellowship pathway for clinicians interested in leading data-driven research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedicine.

The fully funded programme includes a one-year MSc in AI and machine learning, followed by either:

  • A three-year discovery-led PhD, or
  • Two years of postdoctoral research

The pathway is designed to equip clinicians with formal AI and machine learning training while enabling them to apply these skills to cutting-edge biomedical research.

Please note that applicants must currently qualify for UK home fee status to be eligible for this fellowship.

Postdoctoral Clinical Fellowships

The Crick’s Postdoctoral Career Development Fellowships are aimed at clinicians who already hold a research PhD and wish to further develop their research portfolio while progressing towards an independent clinical academic career.

Fellowships can be undertaken on a full-time basis for one year or part-time over two years. Fellows work with a Crick group leader to develop and deliver their own research project within a Crick research group.

There are two routes available:

  • Route 1 (fully funded): Applications open from 1 March to 30 April 2027
  • Route 2 (externally salary-funded): Open year-round for clinicians who already have salary support, for example through an Academic Clinical Lectureship (ACL)
