Through our work in organising meetings, conferences and other events, we collect contact information of parties who declare interest. This includes:

- Postal address
- Email address
- Telephone number

We collect visitor statistics of users of the Medical Schools Council and CATCH websites.
Medical Schools Council Clinical Academic Staff Survey
Every year, medical schools send some of the information held by them about clinical academic staff employed with a substantive university contract and an honorary NHS contract, to the Medical Schools Council (MSC).
The Medical Schools Council is responsible for the database in which the information collected from medical schools is stored. The data is collected and used for the legitimate and lawful purpose of meeting the aims of Medical Schools Council.
What types of personal data does the survey collect?
The types of personal information the Medical Schools Council process include:
- Demographic profiles such as gender, date of birth, nationality, and ethnicity
- Employment and contract details including Clinical Excellence Awards, clinical specialty and academic grade held
Information about ethnicity or nationality will only be used in an aggregate level only and in accordance with the Equality Act. The information will not be used by the Medical Schools Council in any way to identify or make decisions about individuals.
Purposes for collecting information about clinical academic staff
There are two main purposes for the data collection and publication by the Medical Schools Council and Dental Schools Council:
- Monitoring trends in clinical academic staffing as a basis for partnership between the NHS and universities
- Promoting, maintaining and improving high-quality education, research and clinical practice in the UK
It is not intended to use information returned to MSC to make decisions about you.
Data may also be shared to enable research on the clinical academic workforce. Shared data will only be processed according to the purposes set out in a data sharing agreement.
What is the legal basis for processing personal data?
Our legal basis for collecting and processing personal data includes:
- Carrying out a public task in the public interest. This includes historical, statistical and research purposes.
- Carrying out duties to comply with the Equality Act 2010.
- Legitimate interests. This includes facilitating communications between MSC members and organisations involved in medical education, the higher education sector and higher education funding
Sharing your information
The Medical Schools Council may share your information for several reasons. These include:
- Our obligations to comply with current legislation
- To comply with a court order
- The Medical Schools Council have received explicit consent from you for disclosure
Your personal data will not be transferred outside of the European Union, to third countries or international organisations.
Use of cookies

Retaining information
The Medical Schools Council will retain the data for as long as it is necessary. Data Protection details
