Wellcome is investing £155 million in 14 new doctoral training programmes across the UK, aimed at supporting the next generation of healthcare professional researchers.
The programmes will create new opportunities for doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, vets, dentists and allied health professionals to develop research careers alongside clinical practice. The investment responds to a decade-long decline in the number of healthcare professional researchers in the UK, with demanding clinical careers often making it difficult to access research training and remain academically active.
The new programmes will not only provide doctoral training, but also focus on career progression and retention, helping researchers navigate the transition between academic research and clinical practice.
By bringing together diverse healthcare professionals and creating stronger research environments, the programmes will support world-class discovery research and help turn frontline clinical insight into innovations that improve health for generations to come.
