To mark International Women’s Day, the BMA’s Women in Academic Medicine (WAM) group is hosting a cross‑professional webinar with colleagues from the legal profession, to spotlight the systemic issues of sexism, harassment and violence experienced by women across both professions. The event supports the 2026 IWD theme #GiveToGain, focusing on reciprocity, allyship, and practical support for women’s organisations, including Surviving in Scrubs and the Medical Women’s Federation.
Key speakers:
- The Rt Hon Dame Maria Miller DBE – Commissioner for Conduct, The Bar Council of England and Wales
- Prof Scarlett McNally OBE – Immediate Past President, Medical Women’s Federation
- Ms Erin Maccabe – Deputy Co-Chair for Student Welfare, BMA Medical Students Committee
- Ms Alice Reeves – Barrister, Guildhall Chambers
- Dr Becky Cox – Co-founder, Surviving in Scrubs
- Dr Caroline Jolley and Dr Sarah Mills – Co-chairs, BMA Women in Academic Medicine group
Event aims:
- Share evidence from recent legal and medical sector reports on sexism and sexual violence
- Provide “on the ground” perspectives from both early career and senior professionals
- Enable open discussion through a moderated cross sector panel
- Highlight opportunities for participants to contribute meaningfully through the IWD 2026 theme #GiveToGain initiative
